Saw Palmetto

what is saw palmettoWhat is Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is  an extract from the fruit of serenoa repens (a palm plant native to North The united states), a small palm plant. The extract is used in traditional and alternative medicine for different reasons, but mostly for benign prostate enlargement.

Saw palmetto leaves are consist of fronds about a metre in length, with prickly edges that give the tree its name. They are similar to the leaves of the palmettos of genus Sabal . Saw palmetto is often combined with nettle extract to treat BPH.

What is Saw Palmetto and How Can it Help You ?

Saw palmetto might modestly reduce some symptoms of BPH such as going to the bathroom at night in some men. Some research also shows that saw palmetto might work as well as some prescription medications such as finasteride (Proscar ) or tamsulosin (Flomax ).

Saw Palmetto is not “safer” nor does it cause “fewer side effects”. People report just as many, if not more saw palmetto  side effects, from excessive unrelenting hair shedding, to hormonally related side effects like acne and testicle pain, to emotionally related side effects and even estrogen related side effects like breast growth.

Saw palmetto might decrease the effects of estrogen in the body. Taking saw palmetto along with birth control pills might decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills.

 Saw Palmetto Benefits?

Saw palmetto is approved by Commission E (Germany’s regulatory agency for herbs) for prostate complaints or irritable bladder. Saw palmetto supplements have become popular in the United States in recent years as well and are often marketed “for prostate health.”.

Saw palmetto may also boost the general quality of life for men with BPH. Saw Palmetto also claims to have the same effect on DTH. I don’t know if that is true or not.
